Corporate Gifts: How to Choose a Logo Branding Method.

Updated: 5 days ago
Choosing a logo method is a technical design decision, not a finishing detail. Printing, embroidery and engraving interact differently with fabric, metal, plastic and coated surfaces. A logo that looks excellent on a screen may lose fine lettering, colour accuracy or contrast when applied to a small promotional gift.
Screen printing: effective for simple, bold artwork
Screen printing applies ink through a stencil onto compatible surfaces. It is commonly considered for textile products such as canvas totes and certain pouches. Strong shapes and limited solid colours are often more predictable than fine gradients. The exact number of colours, print area and ink system affect feasibility and cost.
What to check: logo width and height, minimum line thickness, bag fabric colour, whether both sides need printing and how the print behaves on seams or textured surfaces.
Embroidery: textured and durable-looking branding
Embroidery builds a logo using stitched thread and is often used on selected bags, caps and apparel. It creates a tactile effect but has constraints: very small text, delicate gradients and dense detailing can be difficult. Stitch count, backing, material thickness and placement influence the final result.
What to check: whether the logo can be simplified without losing brand identity, the thread colours available and whether the fabric is strong enough for the chosen stitch area.
Laser engraving: subtle marks on compatible surfaces
Laser engraving changes or removes the surface finish on suitable materials, often metal or coated substrates. It can produce a restrained appearance, but its colour usually depends on the underlying material and finish rather than ordinary ink selection. Test or confirm the result on the actual substrate.
What to check: achievable contrast, legibility of small lettering, marking position and whether the selected material is suitable for the process.
Full-colour printing: useful for complex artwork
Depending on the product and printer, digital or transfer-based methods may reproduce multi-colour logos and photographic artwork. Different methods have different requirements for surface preparation, colour accuracy, durability and minimum runs. 'Full colour' is not a guarantee that every image will print perfectly on every object.
A quick method-selection rule
Flat canvas tote with a simple one- or two-colour design: ask about screen printing.
Heavier textile bag with a small, simplified emblem: consider embroidery.
Compatible metal gift with a discreet brand mark: consider engraving.
Complex multicolour graphic on a suitable product: discuss digital or transfer printing.
These are starting points. The supplier must confirm suitability against the actual product material, shape and artwork.
How to prepare logo artwork
Provide vector artwork where possible, plus an editable master file.
Specify brand colour references, while allowing for material-dependent variation.
State minimum clear space and any brand guidelines.
Confirm print size in millimetres; do not judge only from an enlarged PDF.
Check a digital proof and decide whether a physical sample is necessary.
What changes the price?
Price can be affected by setup, number of decoration positions, colour count, embroidery stitch count, order quantity, substrate and sampling. Ask for a line-item comparison when two techniques appear similar in the mock-up. For many promotional products, the decoration method is only one part of the total cost.
Frequently asked questions
Can every corporate logo be embroidered?
Not always at its original detail level. Small lettering, gradients and tightly packed elements may need simplification or a different technique.
Does laser engraving reproduce a Pantone colour?
Normally no. The resulting mark depends on the treated material and surface finish; confirm a sample rather than assuming a specified ink colour.
Which technique lasts longest?
There is no universal answer. Durability depends on substrate, finishing process, washing or handling conditions and quality control. Request relevant care or performance information.
